French follows English, Mandarin (in China), and Spanish, reflecting the rapid shifts in the global linguistic landscape.

In the report “French in the World 2026”, presented by the Secretary-General of the organization, Louise Mushikiwabo, during March in Quebec, a remarkable increase was recorded in the number of French speakers, after it was estimated at 321 million in 2022. This growth is partly attributed to the adoption of a new statistical methodology that included children who receive their education in French, which contributed to its rise to fourth place, surpassing Classical Arabic.

Has French really surpassed the Arabic language?

Despite the International Organization of the Francophonie's ranking of French as fourth globally, this is related to the methodology of calculation, which includes learners and users.

In contrast, Arabic is often counted only in terms of Modern Standard Arabic (approximately 335 million speakers),...Read More

Letters in Motion: The Contemporary Vision of Wissam Shawkat

For more than forty years, Iraqi calligrapher Wissam Shawkat has dedicated his life to the timeless art of Arabic calligraphy. Through precision, passion, and discipline, he has transformed traditional script into a contemporary visual language that speaks to global audiences. Today, his work stands as a bridge between heritage and innovation.

His flowing calligraphy has appeared on remarkable platforms. From presenting his art to Tim Cook on an iPad to illuminating the iconic Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Shawkat’s letters have traveled far beyond paper. Yet, at its heart, his work remains deeply personal and rooted in classical foundations.

“Al Wissam Script” – A Modern Signature

Shawkat’s latest exhibition, “Al Wissam Script,” was presented at Tashkeel Studio and Gallery. The exhibition featured 51 paintings that highlight his unique style, bold, dynamic, and experimental, yet respectful of traditional calligraphy rules.

Interestingly, Shawkat did not plan to create a new script. The style developed naturally over time. Around 2004, while designing logos for banks and media companies, he began experimenting with letterforms. Gradually, this evolved into a modern, flexible, and kinetic script that his followers later named “Al Wissam Script.”

His compositions often feature thick, powerful strokes.

“Shifted Diagonal” repositions the diagonal not merely as a compositional device, but as a philosophical axis that reframes perception itself. In the heart of Dubai’s financial district, RARARES Gallery presents Shifted Diagonal, a compelling solo exhibition by Ruslan Gudiev, on view through 18 February 2026. Gudiev’s compositions balance analytic precision with intuitive rhythm, reflecting his multidisciplinary background in painting, architecture, design, and even music. Before dedicating himself fully to painting in the mid-1980s, Gudiev performed as a guitarist and bassist in jazz and pop ensembles, an influence that subtly reverberates through the syncopated movement and chromatic cadences of his visual structures.

Born in 1944 in Kobi and educated at the...Read More

Coffee Art Marathon : World's Only Creative Coffee Movement by Art4you Gallery

The aroma of coffee now carries more than comfort, it carries creativity. With the formal inauguration of its RAK Edition on January 25th 2026, the Coffee Art Marathon (CAM2) expanded its creative artistic movement into Ras Al Khaimah and kicked off a three-month cultural extravaganza that will run through April 2026.

Building on the increasing popularity of its first edition in 2024, CAM2 is back with a bang, turning cafes, galleries, and public areas into lively centers of creative experimentation. Now that '7 EMIRATES' has joined the movement, it expands its reach throughout the United Arab Emirates and fortifies the conversation between coffee culture and modern art.

A Movement Where Coffee Becomes Canvas

Fundamentally, Coffee Art Marathon is a creative platform that reimagines coffee as a sustainable artistic medium rather than just a collection of events. Through the use of robust espresso-toned strokes and delicate sepia washes, artists experiment with the natural textures and erratic beauty of coffee colors, transforming daily routine into visual narrative.

Coffee Art Marathon promotes cooperation, sustainability, and cross-disciplinary creativity by uniting up-and-coming artists, seasoned...Read More

Art Basel is coming to Qatar for the first time , and it’s a significant step. This is the fair’s debut in the MENASA region, showing how the global art world is increasingly focusing on this part of the world. The event takes place at M7 and the Doha Design District in Msheireb Downtown Doha, highlighting Doha’s strong cultural vision and its growing position in international contemporary art.

Running from February 5–7, the fair features 87 galleries and 84 artists. More than half of the artists come from the MENASA region. Unlike the usual booth-style layout, this edition follows an open format with solo presentations. This allows visitors to slow down and spend more time with each artist’s work.

The Theme: Becoming

The theme of the first edition is Becoming. It focuses on change, how people, societies, and systems are constantly evolving. In the Gulf region, this idea feels especially meaningful. The region blends tradition with rapid development. Oral histories exist alongside digital networks, and old trade routes have transformed into new cultural exchanges. Here, art does not just reflect change, it actively shapes identity and society.

Curatorial Direction

The fair is led by Artistic Director Wael Shawky, known for his work in film, performance, and storytelling.

Volery Gallery’s latest presentation, Serendipity, marks an impressive Middle Eastern debut for Chinese-born, London-based artist Yuyu Zhitong. Running until 11 February 2026, the exhibition invites viewers into a world where intuition meets disciplined form, offering a sensorial journey that is as emotionally compelling as it is visually vibrant.

Zhitong’s work is a celebration of spontaneity, rooted in her background in Chinese dance, which informs the physicality and rhythm of her brushwork. Each canvas pulses with energy through gestural mark-making and layered compositions, creating a dialogue between chance and control. Paintings such as Fluffy River (2025) showcase her mastery of color, texture, and motion, conjuring landscapes that feel at once ethereal and grounded, whimsical yet profoundly introspective.

The exhibition thrives on contrasts, between structured form and emotive spontaneity, between nostalgia and liberation, between the childlike wonder of discovery and the psychological depth of reflection. Zhitong’s aesthetic sensibility draws on the cultural vibrancy of 1980s–90s Asia, a period imbued with sentimentality and a growing embrace of freedom, and she translates these influences into compositions that feel both intimate and expansive.

Serendipity is not merely an exhibition; it is a space for viewers to encounter the poetry of unpredictability. Each work encourages reflection, inviting audiences to pause and consider the serendipitous...Read More

In a landmark cultural moment for the region, Louvre Abu Dhabi unveils one of the most compelling exhibitions of the decade, Picasso, the Figure. This monographic exhibition is not merely a presentation of masterpieces; it is an intimate encounter with the restless genius of Pablo Picasso, a towering force who forever altered the language of modern art.

Running until 31 May 2026, the exhibition gathers an extraordinary selection of works, anchored by landmark loans from the prestigious Musée National Picasso–Paris, alongside significant contributions from the Louvre Museum, Mobilier National, regional institutions, and the museum’s own distinguished collection. Together, these works create a rare narrative arc, tracing Picasso’s lifelong obsession with the human figure and his relentless experimentation across style, emotion, and ideology.

The Human Figure, Deconstructed and Reborn

At the heart of the exhibition lies Picasso’s revolutionary approach to the body. For him, the human form was never static; it was elastic, fragmented, emotional, and symbolic. From classical renderings inspired by Iberian and African influences to the fractured planes of Cubism, Picasso dismantled anatomy only to reconstruct it anew, revealing not what the eye sees, but what the soul feels.

Visitors move through decades of transformation. Early portraits reveal sensitivity and discipline. Later works confront us with distortion, abstraction, and psychological depth.
