THE ART OF IDENTITY, HEALING, AND FILIPINA WOMANHOOD
Chromatic Narratives of Identity and Healing by Jamie Samson
Jamie Samson is a contemporary Filipina artist whose practice moves between two distinct yet deeply connected visual languages, Cubist Pop Art and mixed-media abstraction. Across both bodies of work, she explores themes of identity, mental health, and the evolving narrative of modern Filipina womanhood through a visual language that is at once immediate, emotive, and enduring.

Her Cubist Pop Art works are primarily two-dimensional acrylic paintings on canvas and paper, defined by bold color palettes, fragmented geometric compositions, and striking figurative abstraction. Alongside these, her mixed-media abstracts introduce textured surfaces, layered materials, and a tactile depth that invites both visual and sensory engagement. Together, these parallel practices allow Samson to navigate the terrain between structure and spontaneity, order and emotional flux.

Samson’s love for visual storytelling began in childhood, when she spent countless hours copying Japanese anime cards. This early connection to stylized form and expressive character design shaped her artistic sensibilities and remains a subtle yet persistent influence in her work. In later years, the experimental structures of Pablo Picasso and the cultural vitality of Andy Warhol further informed her artistic direction, inspiring a synthesis of Cubist fragmentation and Pop Art’s bold visual language.

After an extended two-decade hiatus from art, Samson returned to her practice in 2023 with renewed purpose and clarity. Since then, she has been steadily establishing her presence in the Philippine art scene through multiple exhibitions across Metro Manila, including Art in the Park and showcases organized by the UP College of Fine Arts Alumni Association. Her first solo exhibition, Chromax: Healing in Full Color, held in September 2024 at the Gateway Art Fair, marked a significant milestone, both professionally and personally.
Her artistic journey continues to gain momentum in 2025, with an expanding international footprint. Samson has participated in the Sakinah Group Show in Dubai in August, followed by group exhibitions in Singapore and Malaysia in September. In October, she presented her second solo exhibition, In Her Eyes, once again at the Gateway Art Fair. November was particularly momentous, with her work featured in the UPCFAAAI group exhibition and her first international solo presentation at the Tokyo International Art Fair, an important chapter in her evolving career.

At the heart of Samson’s work lies a deeply personal narrative. Living with Bipolar Disorder, she uses art as both a refuge and a form of resistance, a space where vulnerability becomes strength and emotional complexity finds form. Her Cubist Pop Art, with its fractured faces and recurring motifs of eyes, reflects both the fragmentation and reconstruction of the self. The eyes, in particular, emerge as symbols of emotional truth and quiet hope, serving as windows into memory, tension, resilience, and transformation. Her mixed-media abstracts embrace a freer, more intuitive process. Through texture, layering, and unexpected material combinations, these works articulate emotions that cannot be confined within structured lines. Together, both bodies of work form a continuous exploration of how chaos and harmony coexist within the human experience.
Samson’s Filipino heritage remains a constant undercurrent in her art. The vibrancy of her color palettes echoes the festivals, textiles, and landscapes of the Philippines, while her intricate layering reflects the way stories, traditions, and personal histories are passed through generations. Even in abstraction, the warmth of cultural memory is present, woven quietly yet powerfully into each composition.
Through every painting, Jamie Samson offers not only a glimpse into her inner world but also an invitation for viewers to reflect on their own narratives. Her work speaks to emotional honesty, cultural identity, and the resilience of the human spirit, making her artistic voice both deeply intimate and universally resonant.
