Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial 2026 - Redefining Home Through Art in the Public Realm

By Surabhi Bala

· Museum & Heritage

Art has the remarkable ability to transform not only galleries but entire cities. In 2026, Abu Dhabi once again embraces this philosophy as the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial returns for its highly anticipated second edition, inviting residents and visitors to experience art where everyday life unfolds, in streets, parks, neighbourhoods and shared public spaces.

Organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the Biennial continues its vision of making contemporary art accessible to everyone, removing the traditional boundaries between the artwork and its audience. Rather than asking people to visit museums, the city itself becomes a living gallery where creativity is encountered naturally during daily life.

Running from 23 October 2026 to 15 February 2027, the Biennial will begin in Al Ain before expanding across Abu Dhabi from 15 November 2026, creating a cultural journey that connects two historically and geographically distinct cities through the universal language of art.

Home Beyond Four Walls

Curated under the artistic direction of Elvira Dyangani Ose, this year's Biennial explores the thought-provoking theme: "Home: A Glossary for a Communal Sense of Place." The theme invites audiences to reconsider the meaning of home, not merely as a physical structure, but as an evolving experience shaped by relationships, memories, culture and collective identity. It asks how communities create belonging through the spaces they inhabit together and how public environments become extensions of personal and shared histories.

Through newly commissioned artworks, installations and participatory projects, artists will investigate ideas of migration, identity, coexistence, memory, heritage and the emotional landscapes that define contemporary urban life. Rather than offering a single definition, the Biennial presents "home" as a living vocabulary, one continually rewritten through human connection and cultural exchange.

The City as an Open-Air Museum

One of the defining strengths of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial is its commitment to accessibility. There are no tickets, no prescribed routes and no barriers separating audiences from the artwork. Whether strolling along the Corniche, exploring the bustling Mina district, relaxing in neighbourhood parks or simply commuting through the city, visitors may unexpectedly encounter monumental sculptures, immersive installations, sound works or site-specific interventions that encourage reflection and conversation. This integration of contemporary art into everyday life transforms familiar urban landscapes into spaces of discovery, demonstrating that meaningful artistic experiences need not be confined within museum walls.

Building on a Successful Legacy

The inaugural Biennial, titled "Public Matter," established Abu Dhabi as an important destination for public art in the region. Several commissioned works resonated so strongly with local communities that they have remained as permanent installations, contributing to the emirate's growing public art collection. These enduring works continue to enrich the city's cultural landscape while reinforcing the Biennial's long-term vision: creating art that becomes part of the collective memory of Abu Dhabi.

The second edition builds upon this foundation by expanding its geographical reach, commissioning new artistic voices and encouraging deeper engagement between artists, residents and public spaces.

Beyond Installation: Art as Civic Dialogue

The 2026 Biennial extends far beyond the presentation of sculptures and installations. Its programme includes research-driven artistic practices, community collaborations and public interactions designed to foster meaningful dialogue between artists and audiences. By encouraging participation rather than passive observation, the Biennial positions public art as a civic practice, one that promotes inclusion, shared ownership and cultural exchange. These initiatives acknowledge that public spaces are not merely physical environments but social ecosystems where stories intersect and communities evolve.

Strengthening Abu Dhabi's Cultural Vision

As Abu Dhabi continues to establish itself as one of the Middle East's leading cultural capitals, the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial reflects the emirate's ongoing investment in creativity, innovation and cultural accessibility. The Biennial demonstrates how contemporary art can contribute to urban identity, enrich public life and encourage dialogue across cultures. It aligns with a broader vision of creating cities where art is not an occasional event but an integral part of everyday experience.

By placing artistic expression directly within the public realm, Abu Dhabi continues to redefine how cities engage with culture, inviting everyone, from seasoned collectors and art professionals to families, students and first-time visitors, to become participants in a shared artistic journey. As anticipation builds for the announcement of participating artists, commissions and exhibition sites, the 2026 edition promises another inspiring chapter in the emirate's evolving cultural story. The Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial reminds us that art belongs not only within galleries, but wherever people gather, connect and create meaning together. In doing so, it transforms the city itself into a canvas, one where every street, every park and every shared space has the potential to become a place of discovery, reflection and belonging.
