Through the Lens of Humanity: Sharjah and Athens Unite to Celebrate the Legacy of Sir Don McCullin

Athens: The power of photography to transcend borders, cultures, and generations was vividly demonstrated as His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Media Council, inaugurated the remarkable exhibition “Life, Death, & Everything in Between” by legendary photographer Sir Don McCullin in Athens, Greece.

Organised by the Athens Photo World Awards in collaboration with the Xposure International Photography Festival, the exhibition presents an extraordinary retrospective of McCullin’s five-decade career, inviting audiences into a deeply moving exploration of humanity's triumphs, struggles, and resilience.

As he toured the exhibition, H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed viewed a carefully curated collection of photographs that span some of the most defining moments of modern history. From the harrowing realities of conflict zones in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Lebanon to the serene landscapes of rural England, Africa, India, and Indonesia, the exhibition reflects McCullin’s unparalleled ability to document both the fragility and strength of the human spirit.

The exhibition traces the evolution of McCullin’s artistic journey, beginning with his early documentation of marginalized communities in London and progressing through his powerful war photography before culminating in works that celebrate peace, beauty, and contemplation. Together, these images form a compelling visual narrative that highlights not only historical events but also the universal emotions that connect humanity.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest documentary photographers of our time, Sir Don McCullin has spent more than fifty years bearing witness to conflicts, humanitarian crises, and social realities across the globe. His fearless dedication to revealing the truth has often placed him in great personal danger, yet his work continues to serve as a profound reminder of photography’s role in fostering awareness, empathy, and understanding.

The exhibition also symbolizes the growing cultural partnership between the Xposure International Photography Festival and Athens Photo World. Over the past decade, Xposure has established itself as one of the world’s leading photography platforms, bringing together acclaimed photographers, visual storytellers, and audiences from across continents. This collaboration reinforces the shared commitment to preserving history, promoting visual literacy, and celebrating photography as a universal language.

A significant highlight of the initiative is the announcement that Sir Don McCullin’s exhibition will transition into a permanent display at the MOMus–Thessaloniki Museum of Photography. This landmark development further strengthens international artistic cooperation while ensuring that future generations can continue to engage with the photographer’s extraordinary legacy.

In recognition of Sir Don McCullin’s outstanding contribution to photography, H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed presented the renowned photographer with a special limited-edition Leica Monochrom camera, uniquely engraved with the name and emblem of Sharjah. The commemorative piece was created exclusively for the Xposure International Photography Festival and stands as a symbol of appreciation for McCullin’s lifelong dedication to visual storytelling.

During his visit to Athens, H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed also explored the world-renowned Acropolis Museum, home to thousands of archaeological treasures from ancient Greece. The museum’s innovative architectural design, advanced conservation techniques, and impressive collection of Classical and Roman artefacts provided a deeper insight into the enduring relationship between cultural heritage, preservation, and education.

More than an exhibition, “Life, Death, & Everything in Between” serves as a powerful reminder of photography’s ability to document history, inspire dialogue, and illuminate the shared human experience. Through the vision of Sir Don McCullin and the collaborative efforts of Sharjah and Athens, visitors are invited to reflect on the complexities of life while celebrating the enduring power of art to connect people across the world.
